Electrosport by EFP (c1972)
Electric AMC Hornet prototypes made by the Electric Furl Propulsion company of Ferndale, Michigan.
the company also established the “World’s first Electric Car Expressway” between Detroit and Chicago on I-94 with six 50kW charging stations located at Holiday Inn hotels near the highway.
an EFP designed direct current series-wound traction motor was bolted through an aluminium adapter plate to the car’s standard clutch and 3-speed manual transmission. 24 six-volt “Tri-Polar” cobalt-lead storage batteries were installed under the car’s bonnet and in the boot providing a range up to 250 miles.
the car’s projected price was $12,000 and the fact that in 1972 a gallon of fuel cost 36 cents meant the project never developed beyond prototype stage.

Math corrections make that aout $60k for the car ad around $2 for gas in today’s money

But the MSPR of a Hornet was only 2600. Which is about 16k in today’s money.
So it wouldn’t be the equivalent of Mitsubishi asking 60k for an electric 4 door Mirage.

i just ran numbers. $6.17 for every 1972 dollar. It’s a lot of fun to see what costs what today vs. then. Especially when some older people I talk with talk about how much ‘better’ things were when they were kids. Gas was only this much!....yeah...lets do math. lol. .

Minimum wage was better. 1.60/hr then is 10 and hour now. Altho in a lot of places no one is playing minimum now.
About 2 years ago Kwik trip moved into my area and basically raised minimum wage here because they start at 10 and hours even McDonald’s went to 9.50!

That’s pretty decent range for the time, but a total lack of trunk space and basically no charging infrastructure anywhere else in the US certainly limited practicality. I’d also wager performance was mediocre.
$12,000 is also insane for a Hornet, especially a base model with a 3spd. Pretty good cars, but a Cadillac was $6,000.

No kidding. All of the GOP complained biggly about raising minimum wage on a national scale and unless the numbers were plugged in to the calculator, nobody knew how far it had sunk in the last 40 years! Correcting things for inflation is key to thing running smoothly and people paying rent.
